SECTION // 01The Forgotten Funnel Stage
Brands obsess over PDPs and checkout. They spend thousands on hero images and homepage design. But collection pages, the pages that sit between homepage and PDP, are almost always neglected.
This is a mistake. Collection pages are where browsing becomes shopping. They are where visitors decide which products deserve a closer look. A poorly designed collection page means visitors never reach your optimized PDP.
The data: Collection pages typically account for 30-40% of all pageviews on a Shopify store. They are the gateway to your products. If the gateway is broken, nothing downstream matters.
SECTION // 02Five Optimization Levers
1. Product Card Design
What information appears on the product card determines click-through rate to the PDP. Elements to test:
- Image style: Lifestyle vs product-only vs hover-to-swap
- Price visibility: Always shown vs "From $X" vs hidden until click
- Review stars: Shown on card vs only on PDP
- Color swatches: Visible on card vs only on PDP
- Quick-add button: Add to cart from collection vs force PDP visit
- Badges: "Bestseller," "New," "Sale," "Low stock"
The best product card gives visitors enough information to decide whether to click, without overwhelming them with choices.
2. Filter and Sort UX
If your store has 50+ products in a collection, filters are not optional. They are critical.
Filter optimization:
- Placement: Sidebar (desktop) + top bar or bottom sheet (mobile)
- Filter types: Price range, color, size, rating, availability, product type
- Default sort: Bestselling (not newest or alphabetical)
- Active filter visibility: Show applied filters clearly with easy removal
- Result count: Update in real-time as filters are applied
Sort options that matter:
- Bestselling (default)
- Price: Low to High
- Price: High to Low
- Newest
- Highest Rated
- Most Reviewed
3. Above-the-Fold Content
A brief collection description with a clear value proposition helps visitors understand they are in the right place. But keep it short (2-3 sentences max).
Do not waste this space on SEO keyword stuffing. A paragraph of keywords that no human would read signals low quality to both visitors and search engines.
4. Grid Layout
Test grid configurations:
- 2-column (mobile default): Larger images, more detail visible
- 3-column (desktop default): Good balance of density and detail
- 4-column (large catalogs): Maximum products visible, minimal detail
- List view (comparison shopping): Full details side by side
The right answer depends on your product type, image quality, and how much information visitors need to make a click-through decision.
5. Pagination vs Infinite Scroll vs Load More
Each approach has tradeoffs:
- Infinite scroll: More page views, but can feel overwhelming and hurts SEO
- Pagination: Clear structure, good for SEO, but adds clicks
- Load more button: Best compromise for most stores. Keeps the page manageable while reducing friction vs pagination.
SECTION // 03Revenue Impact
A 10% improvement in collection page click-through rate compounds through the rest of your funnel:
- 10% more PDP views
- Which means 10% more add-to-carts (assuming constant ATC rate)
- Which means 10% more checkouts
- Which means 10% more revenue
At $1.5M/month, a 10% improvement in collection page CTR adds approximately $150K/month. That is $1.8M per year from optimizing pages most brands ignore entirely.
